Q: Is it okay to swim after Mohs surgery

My husband was just discharged 7 weeks after his Mohs surgery for squamous cell on his ear (not the lobe, but in the crease near the top of the ear).  We belong to a indoor swimming pool club, and we also swim at our neighborhood city pool during their morning Senior Swim.  Is it harmful for him to be in a swimming pool?

Hello

This is an excellent question for your husband's doctor.

I did research your question and here is what one Skin Center says about the healing process and any special precautions:  "Swimming pools, oceans, and jaccuzi's are usually off limits while the stitches are in. These may increase your chance of infection."

Are your husband's stitches out by now?

I would call the doctor first just to make sure it will be okay.

I hope you two can resume your swimming soon.  Thank you for your question.

Thanks so much for your answer and that great link.  My husband didn't need any stitches - the surgeon wanted it to heal from inside out instead, and in fact, it healed so well that he didn't even need a skin graft.  The Dr. did say it was okay to swim, but my husband was still nervous and wanted to see what others did after surgery and discharge.  With 90 degree weather here already, I don't think it will take much longer for my husband to resume swimming!  Thanks again.
