I have just been diagnosed with moderate to severe precancerous lesion from a mole that was shaved off. My doctor now recommends surgery. Is this the only alternative, or can I just wait and see if the mole returns?

the procedure that is being recommended should be a MOHS procedure and the reason is that it is an approach that will carefull dissect away any addtional cancer cells while still preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. It is a lengthy procedure since they repeatedly test tissue samples as they remove them and yes, if your doctor thinks it is necessary to assure that all "pre-cancerous cells and tissue" is removed - then it probably is necessary.
