Q: Should I be worried about my mole?

I recently found a mole on the back of my neck that seemed like it came out of no where. It started itching and when I scratched it it bleed. It got so annoying after a few days that as hard as it was and as thick as it was, I cut the skin off with alcohol wiped surgical cutters. The mole was a little smaller then the tip of a pencil eraser, but very jagged from top to bottom and pink with brownish tones through it. I have other moles, (only one is raised in a private area, but no itching that I can remember) but when I told a friend what I did she freaked and said "what if you have cancer", I didnt even think that was possible for me but after reading your article and others about skin cancer I am worried. Could I have caused it to become worse or spread by cutting it? Should I be worried? Im 33yrs old w/2 kids I need a little advise. I work a lot so going to the doctor is not always priority on my list(especially with lousy health coverage) but if its important I'll go. Please advise? Thanks.

Thanks for your post Nancy.  It really is important you have a doctor check out the mole (and any other spots) that might be of concern.  It's the only way to determine what it is and its especially important to get it examined as quickly as you can - waiting is not a good thing to do here.

In the meantime, you can read about birthmarks and moles on our site in Check a Symptom.  You may also be interested in learning more from our Skin Cancer Basics material.
