Q: Is Mohs by expert dermatologist better than regular plastic surgeon for facial BCC?

I have a small BCC next to a nostril (1cm to side of lower edge). I consulted with a highly recommended dermatologist whose practice is entirely Mohs and with a plastic surgeon. The plastic surgeon was horrified that I was considering Mohs, saying they act as their own pathologists and often take out way too much tissue. Mohs MD says Mohs has highest cure rate. I am confused. If it is surgery, why not see a surgeon? Is Mohs better than hospital pathologist if Mohs surgeon is expert? I am currently scheduled to have Mohs by dermatologist with plastic surgeon closure, but wonder if just going to a plastic surgeon would be better. Help...

Hi scfonta

This is clearly a personal choice that only you can decide upon.  However, if it were me...I would absolutely be certain that a dermatologist is there doing this procedure.  I am not sure why a plastic surgeon would be horrified about a dermatologist doing Mohs surgery.  This in itself seems suspicious to me.  The thing about Mohs surgery is that they leave as much healthy skin as possible.  Your doctor will also ensure that they get all of the cancer and this is the most important thing about this type of surgery because you don't want it coming back.

I think you have made a good choice.
