Q: I just found out I have melanoma

I know it will take time to find out if it has spread, but what do I do in the meantime..?  I feel tired, achy and I am not sure if it is stress or maybe it has spread..I have 3 kids and I am so scared.

You need to know what questions to ask the doctor. For starters, what stage is the cancer at? How large is the lesion? Has it reached the nearby lymph nodes? You should know that melanomas caught early are almost always curable, which may ease your stress. If the lesion is less than 1 mm in diameter and has not spread to the local lymph node basin or beyond, your chances of long-term survival are very good.

I also was recently diagnosed with stage III melanoma. I had the melanoma removed from my thigh and sentinal lymph node (which turned out to be cancerous) so they removed the remaining lymph nodes in my groin. These thankfully turned out to be non-cancerous. After this I had 30days of interferon treatment. I now have to have a cat scan every three months for the next two years.

I also am a mother of four children and thinking about them was the scariest moment when I first found out. I was terrified. I have since gone thru so much but am doing good and can only hope my future is bright.

My family really rallied behind me and I even got married this past christmas. So while going thru all the scary and not so pleasant stuff I realized that I would do anything to live and be there for my family.

I wish you the best and hope you can have a positive attitude because it really does help you feel stronger and more incharge of your emotions.

Keep in touch, I care!
