As told in this article about cherry angiomas, from the National Institutes of Health, the cause is unknown. I have a couple small ones, and was just at the dermatologist who noted them, but said they were no problem and came with age in some people.
Though sometimes a biopsy might be taken, the article says that they are usually harmless, and they note that if they are unsightly, there are several ways to remove them.
