Q: I have skin grafts from 3rd degree burns. it's been 4 years, can i go in a tanning bed?

43% of my body was 3rd degree burned in a fire, so i'm one big scar when you add the donor sites.  My chest, head and left arm were the only parts not scarred.  Tanning always helped my complexion, and was very therapudic for me.  What are the risks for me if I use a tanning bed?

Hello Nickey!

I am so sorry that you got burned like this.  It must have been traumatic for you.

I am not a doctor but my opinion is please don't go to a tanning bed.  I would recommend that nobody use tanning beds as they are so harmful for your skin.  The the use of tanning beds dramatically increases your chances of acquiring a deadly melanoma.  In addition...you have skin grafts and burn sites on your skin...I cannot imagine this being good for your skin or health in any way.

Here are some articles to read for the science behind what I am saying:

As far as your complexion there are far better ways to help with acne.  Tanning does not help with acne and it also increases the aging process.

I have adult acne and I talk about how to treat it in my post, How I Got Rid of My Adult Acne.

As always consult with your doctor on this but I think this is not a safe idea at all.

Please let us know how you are doing.  Thank you for your question.
