Q: Skin Exam

First of all is it really necessary to have an annual complete skin exam?

Second, How does the dermatologist thoroughly exam parts of the skin that are covered with hair? Would it be easier to view if the hair were removed, should we be expected to shave before the examination?

Hi Chris

In my opinion...yes it is a good idea to get an annual skin exam.  I wrote about this with my post, "How a Dermatologist Can Save Your Life."

I can tell you that I have very thick long hair but my dermatologist takes the time to look all over my scalp by separating the hair to see the scalp.  They know what to do to look for any suspicious lesions.  During a regular physical...the general practitioner usually does not do such a thorough inspection and usually relies upon your pointing out of any new moles.

One of my friends...his brother died of skin cancer...the melanoma was on his scalp...he was combing his hair and it bled and...by that time it was too late. Since hearing that story...I go see my dermatologist each year religiously.

I don't think you need to shave...you just need a dermatologist to do a thorough examination.

Hope this helps!  Thank you for your question.
