Mediterranean diet may halve skin cancer risk

A diet rich in vegetables, fish, nuts, olive oil, and even tea may dramatically decrease the risk for skin cancer, a new study has found. For the study, scientists compared the sun exposure, family history, and diets of a group of people who had melanoma and compared that data to those of healthy individuals. They found that those who ate a citrus fruit every day, as well as green leafy vegetables, oily fish, and fresh herbs several times per week were 50 percent less likely to develop skin cancer than those who ate a more Western-style diet. Experts say this may explain why rates of skin cancer are far lower in Mediterranean countries, despite the sunny climate.  Read full story >
