Study looks at beachgoer's skin cancer risk

Results from a new study suggest that beachgoers who are most vulnerable to skin cancer use the least amount of sunscreen and have the greatest desire to "get a tan." In the study, Australian researchers looked at the tanning behaviors of 88 Hawaii vacationers. Investigators identified three groups of people, each of which had distinct characteristics and sun protection behaviors. One group, labeled "tan seekers," was made up people who sunburned easily, intended to tan, had used tanning beds recently, and had the least clothing coverage. The researchers say a targeted message is needed for this group of beachgoers because these tanners are at the highest of risk of developing skin cancer and yet do not seem to understand their increased risk.
