Childhood beach vacations may boost melanoma risk

According to new research, children who go on vacations at the beach may be increasing their risk of developing melanoma in later life. Researchers from Denver evaluated 681 children born in 1998 in Colorado, asking their parents about childhood vacation destinations. The investigators then performed skin exams when the children were seven years old, looking for moles, which are a risk factor for developing malignant melanoma. Scientists found that the number of moles the children had went up 5 percent for every year they went on a beach vacation, starting at age one.   Read full story >
