Texas lawmakers are trying to ban teenagers from using tanning beds in that state, saying that the risk of cancer from tanning is comparable to the risks associated with cigarette smoking. According to one lawmaker, Texas should pass the law because teens in the state are not allowed to purchase cigarettes until after they are 18 because it is a carcinogen, and tanning exposes them to the same risk for cancer. If passed, the bill would require anyone under 18 to get a doctor's note before using a tanning bed, and it would require a parent be with them in the salon. Supporters and detractors say this would be the strictest legislation any state has passed on teen tanning.
