"Pleasure" fibers may help in human bonding

An international team of scientists has discovered nerve fibers in the skin that transmit pleasure messages to the brain, a finding they say may improve the understanding of how touch affects human relationships. In addition to discovering these "pleasure fibers," known as "C-tactile" nerve fibers, the researchers also found that a person's skin must be stroked at a certain rate--four to five centimeters per second--to activate a person's pleasure sensation. Scientists say if the stroke rate is faster or slower, the nerve fibers are not activated, and the touch is not perceived as pleasurable.
