Tanning beds have been reclassified as "carcinogenic to humans" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the highest cancer risk category the agency can use. The move comes after an expert review concluded that the risk of melanoma increases by 75 percent when use of tanning beds and sunlamps begins before age 30. Several studies also provided evidence of a link between the use of tanning beds and melanoma of the eye. U.S. experts say legislation will now be required to restrict tanning bed use by minors, and the devices should now carry a black box warning by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to alert users of their risks.
