FDA says mercury dental fillings are safe

Officials with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have concluded that silver mercury fillings do not contain enough mercury to harm the millions of children and adults who have received them. Consumer advocates had protested the fillings, saying the vapor released during the filling's implantation increased the risk of neurological damage in unborn children and young children. But the FDA disagreed, saying their review of the fillings' safety led them to conclude that only people who are allergic to mercury should avoid having the fillings.
