Handheld device may simplify skin cancer diagnosis

A handheld device called the MelaFind may help doctors determine if a spot on the skin could be melanoma. The device is a "gun" that 10 different wavelengths of light to capture images of suspect pigmented skin lesions under the skin. Experts say that currently, it takes 30 to 50 biopsies before doctors find even one case of melanoma--an expensive practice that can make patients unnecessarily worried. The device is currently under review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
