A new study suggests that there may not be a dramatic increase in cases of skin cancer. Instead, it may be that doctors simply have new and better ways of identifying the disease. British researchers looked at the number of cases diagnosed between 1991 and 2004 and found that the number did increase, but the increase was only in early-stage cancer, rather than late-stage melanoma. These researchers say that overstating the problem of skin cancer may actually do harm because it makes people anxious and may prevent them from getting enough exposure to sunlight.
