FTC Warns Indoor Tanning Industry on 'Misleading' Campaigns

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is warning the indoor tanning industry to cease marketing campaigns that seek to hide the risks of skin cancer associated with tanning bed use. The FTC specifically mentioned the Indoor Tanning Association in its warning, saying this industry organization--which represents tanning equipment and facilities--uses ads that call indoor tanning "safe and beneficial" without mentioning tanning beds' skin cancer risks. FTC officials say there is hard scientific evidence that indoor tanning causes skin cancer, and these marketing materials should not gloss over this information with consumers.
