Rare Disease Makes 13-Year-Old Look 50

Many people worry about their appearance as they reach middle age, but for Zara Hartshorn, a rare disease has caused her look middle-aged at only age 13. Hartshorn suffers from lipodystrophy, a syndrome that causes the fatty tissue that supports the skin to crumble as the skin continues to grow. The condition led the child to have an adult appearance at age 10, and she now resembles a woman of 50. In this article, a reporter talks to both Zara and her mother--who also suffers from lipodystrophy--about their experiences living with the social and physical effects of this disease.   Read full story >
