Accutane User Who Developed IBD Awarded $25.2 Million

A New Jersey jury has awarded a man who says he developed inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) after taking the acne medication Accutane $25.2 million in damages. The jury held drugmaker Hoffman-La Roche Inc. responsible for not warning Andrew McCarrell's doctor that McCarrell could develop IBD from taking the severe acne medication. Roche first alerted doctors to a possible link between Accutane and IBD in 1984, but despite accumulating data about this link since then, the company has not strengthened its warnings to prescribing doctors or patients. Roche says it will appeal the decision.
