U.S. soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan who develop lesions due to a parasitic skin infection may be helped by heat therapy, researchers say. Since the start of military operations in these countries, about 1,300 soldiers and civilian personnel have developed Leishmania major skin lesions. In a recent study, researchers found that a single session with a ThermoMed device was as effective at treating these lesions as a 10-day intravenous course of Pentosam (sodium stibogluconate), the current treatment.
