States Move to Ban Indoor Tanning by Teens

Recent studies have linked indoor tanning to a 75 percent increase in the risk of melanoma. Experts say that currently 32 U.S. states restrict access to indoor tanning beds by minors, and more states are considering legislation. In Massachusetts, legislation is under consideration that would ban the use of indoor tanning devices for all minors under the age of 16 and require in-person parental consent for those ages 16-17. In Texas, all minors under under 16.5 years old are barred from using tanning beds, and other states are considering similar measures. The World Health Organization has called for a worldwide ban on indoor tanning by minors in an effort to fight skin cancer.
