According to a new study, the human papillomavirus (HPV) may increase a person's risk of developing the second most common type of skin cancer. Scientists found that the risk of squamous cell carcinoma was even higher in people with HPV than it was in people who took drugs to suppress the immune system. There are vaccines on the market to treat HPV, but experts say that because there are more than 100 types of the virus, the protective ability of vaccines such as Gardasil is unlikely to help prevent other diseases.
