Vaccine Shows Promise for Treating Some Advanced Cancers

Researchers have genetically altered a virus to make a vaccine that may be able to treat a variety of advanced cancers. In a recent small study, the scientists were able to use this vaccine with some success in patients with advanced, recurrent forms of lung, colon, breast, appendix, and pancreatic cancer. The scientists say the vaccine works by provoking a response from the patients' immune cells that are capable of killing tumors. But they stress that further large studies are needed to confirm the vaccine's effects.  Read full story >
