Scientists Puzzled by Unusual Melanoma Patterns in Florida's Minorities

According to a new study published in the Archives of Dermatology, melanoma trends among minority groups in Florida are different than those seen in national trends. Researchers found that the incidence of this deadly type of skin cancer in The Sunshine State was 20 percent higher among Hispanic men and 60 percent higher among black women. But researchers also found that the melanoma rate was 30 percent lower for Hispanic women. Scientists say the high UV index of Florida might explain the different melanoma rate pattern among these minority groups in this state.
