New Drug Treats Advanced-Stage Melanoma

A new treatment for advanced melanoma may help shrink tumors for many patients. According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, the drug targets a mutation of the BRAF protein--a protein that is overproduced in over half of patients who have melanomas. The treatment was able to shrink tumors and slow the disease's progression for 81 percent of the study participants who had the BRAF mutation.
