Hair Conditioners Clarified

By verdungal Thursday, December 02, 2010

If you are like me, you will probably pick up a bottle of conditioner to when you buy shampoo . Navigating the maze of conditioners can be puzzling to say the least.  Here are some guidelines to help you find the perfect conditioner for your hair type.

Unlike shampoo that should be chosen depending on the scalp type, conditioners should be chosen depending on the hair type. This helps avoid greasiness, frizz or limp locks. Eventually, hair can become immune to a conditioning formulas effects, and that will actually cause build up, so no matter what conditioner you end up choosing, change the brand of conditioner you use every month.

Know Your Hair Type

Knowing your hair includes your hair behaviour, how it is affected by what you eat, how it reacts while you are ill, and an average view of how it acts in different climates and different periods of time. Knowing your hair increases your ability to choose the kind of product that you want for your hair, be it a shampoo or a conditioner.

For dry hair, try and find a conditioner that moisturizes your hair. Dry hair is formed due to lack of moisture on you hair. Though your dry hair may not have lots of dirt, it may result in fading of hair color. A conditioner with a moisturizing effect soothes your hair and scalp.

For normal hair, use a conditioner that keeps your hair normal. There are conditioners available in the market that do not tend to specify any particular hair. These conditioners are generally called leave in conditioners and will have a link of compounds that form a thin layer around the hair. This protects your normal hair.

For oily hair, use a conditioner that leaves a thick layer around the hair. Conditioners with lesser fatty acids react with the sebum (which is released by the skin glands and which is more in case of oily hair). This reaction results in nullifying the effect of sebum on the oily hair and makes it look cleaner.

For damaged hair protein rich conditioner do the trick of giving the required protein.

Though a hair conditioner has no effect on hair loss or hair growth, medicated hair conditioner (taken on professional advice) gives the necessary strength that unhealthy hair needs.

How Conditioner WorksThe primary function of a good hair conditioner is to treat the hair after shampooing has taken place and keep it nourished and tamed. Essentially, hair conditioners help replenish the look and feel of the hair after shampooing so they look shiny, healthy and smooth.

Effective hair conditioners help moisturize, add gloss and manageability to hair after it has been shampooed with detergents that deplete its natural protective coating. Thus, in this manner, hair conditioners function much like fabric softeners work for clothing: as a softening after-wash for detergents

A hair conditioner helps to replace natural oils removed by the detergents in shampoos. Therefore the best product for hair that needs the oil, i.e. dry, curly, often frizzy and coarse hair are conditioners containing cetyl or stearyl alcohol , panthenol , form of vitamin B5 or essential oils and botanicals like avocado, jojoba oil or shea butter.
