The Top 5 Concerns of Women with Psoriasis: An Interview with Dr. Lawrence Green

By Merely Me, Health Guide Monday, October 18, 2010
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), up to 7.5 million Americans have Psoriasis which equates to about 2.2 percent of the population. I read with interest your interview with Dr. Green.  I have suffered with psoriasis for 20 years now.  I share many of the concerns that women have.  I can not wear black tops when the psoriasis is in my scalp.  Also, the shame of leaving flakes wherever I go.  I am ashamed of psoriasis that is visible and not concealed by clothing.  Forget about being intimate as my psoriasis usually is in my groin when I have a breakout.  The one thing that wasn't mentioned in your article was the physical pain associated with dry, cracking skin.  Also, some of the treatments are inherently uncomortable.  For example, many of the topical medications leave the skin oily and can discolor clothing.  I was on Enbrel for a while and developed cogestive heart failure as a result.  Methotrexate seems to work well but then there is the risk of liver damage.  I think that it is sound advice to suggest talking with your loved one about your feelings regarding psoriasis.  It is a first step for men as well as women.

Hi there!

I want to thank you for your comment.  This is really good feedback and information.  I would like to write further about the aspects of psoriasis that you mention including the physical pain and the various treatments.

I am wondering if you might like to be interviewed for this site on the topic of being a patient with psoriasis?  Let me know.  I think it would be very informative for our readers.

Hi, I would be ok with being interviewed.  I have tried many many treatments throughout the last 20 years.  However, the thing that hurts me the most is seeing my daughter now suffering from it.  Just be kind with the editing.
