A Dermatologist Answers Your Questions about Acne Scars

Merely Me Health Guide
  • Acne can be a difficult condition to deal with as there can be periods where your skin clears up but then it may only be a matter of time before your skin breaks out again. What makes this cycle even more difficult to deal with is the fact that as even as your skin clears up, acne scars can remain. Acne scars can vary from pock marks or deep indentations to dark spots left on the skin after a blemish heals. One of the frequent questions we get here on MySkinCareConnection  is how to get rid of these acne scars. In order to answer this question we have asked Dr. Lawrence Green, a practicing dermatologist, to give his advice to members seeking help with their acne scars.

Question: What is the best way to get rid of acne scars?

Dr. Green: Unfortunately, there is no one best way to remove acne scars. The method for removal depends on how many scars you have and how they look. Some of the methods used include filling individual scars with a collagen like wrinkle filler, strong acid placed into the scars by your dermatologist, cutting out, or cutting and/or pulling up the scars one at a time, and fractional laser resurfacing. Light chemical peels and microdermabrasion performed at a dermatologist's office can lessen the appearance of acne scars and improve overall pigmentation.

Question: How can a dermatologist help?

Dr. Green: Your dermatologist can help determine what would be best for your scars. The best way to prevent acne scars is simply not to get them; ie. by treating your acne and not letting acne spots come up that can lead to scarring.

Thank you Dr. Green for taking the time to answer these reader questions.
