When I was new teenager, or even a year or two before I experienced the beginnings of an never ending acne. Back then the wisdom was to be rid of them as they came, because then, they would heal. Who knew?
Not my mother, who tried to help by doing exactly what you are saying not to. Learned behavior being what it is, I then continued to squeeze away for the rest of my young life.
I went to dermatologist in my thirties about an unrelated problem and offhandedly asked if she had anything to prevent pimples which I still had breaking out, though not nearly as bad. She gave me something called Brevoxyl which, when used regularly, prevents any more pimples, at least for me..., what if does though, unfortunately, is bleach or discolor, some colored fabrics, also learned the hard way.
My point being to reinforce your advice. There are good products now, the doctor can usually help even in the worse cases. Better to try them first, before staring in the mirror searching for new pimples to destroy along with one's skin.
