I have had skin peels, used Retin A, and skin lighters, etc., and the brown discoloration remain on my cheeks and forehead. They started when I used Estrogen (age 50). My dermatologist told me this is a side affect of using estrogen. I got off the estrogen; however, he said they wouldn't get any worse, but wouldn't go away and this is true. I use 85 spf sunscreen/sunblock
and they still remain. I use concealer and makeup to cover them, but feel self conscience often and feel people are looking at me. The dermatologist also said this is Melasma and can be inherited which will make it even harder to remove. My sister has something on her arms that look like what I have on my face.
Any new procedures for getting rid of this problem?
The only treatment that has worked for me is laser treatment. The area is treated, then it turns even darker for a few days and then as the skin sloughs off, the spots or brown area are gone. I have tried microdermabrasion, bleaching, etc. and nothing works for very long. I think the laser was called "IPL". Sometimes it takes a few treatments. Don't plan any special events for several days after the treatment due to the darkening of the area.
they all are "spots" for English-speaking people....and the word is not too bad.... for the French they refer to "fleurs de cimetière", which is much less nicer, it means 'flowers of the cemetery'.... because the naughty spots appear at an elderly age... I am 57, blond, fair skin, blue eyes, I count some sun spots and I try to be rid of them by using twice a week Locadid (brand name) which is a Trétinoïne. My spots are getting lighter with every passing month, I am on my third month...

I forgot to tell you how I have been almost rid of my "30 brown sun spots" on my right hand : the have been burned out by my dermatologist with Nitrogen (azote), you keep a burn for some 48 hrs., then a scab on each spot for 8 to 10 days, then scabs go off, and my hand was almost as before. The treatment is cheap, no suffering at all, just a little burn, then you most spread SPF50 or more on your hand... to keep it spotless.
I thought the same thing could be done to my face, 'forbidden too dangerous', this is why I am on Locacid.
I have been doing some research lately and have found that most sunscreens are more harmful for your body than sun exposure. Apparently cancer rates have dramatically increased since people have increased their use of sunscreens. So, be careful what experts are suggesting for treatment of sunspots because their solutions could be worse than your current problem. Though it's not the most convenient I have been researching every ingredient in all the products I put on my body such as lotions, lip stuff, makeup, etc. I don't think the human body is designed to absorb the amount of chemicals the average person applies to their skin.
Sunscreen is not the cause of increasing incidents of skin cancer. When sunscreen was first introduced, the consumer products were oils and tanning lotions that magnify the sun's radiation rather than reflect it. Unfortunately, many people growing up in the 60s, 70s, and 80s did not have access to high enough SPF sunscreen to block the sun's UV and gamma radiation. This is also a time when sunbathing became very popular and so people exposed themselves to a lot more radiation than previous generations. Modern sunscreen (SPF 45+) works to block most solar radiation greatly limiting your exposure to harmful radiation and your chances of developing skin cancer. If you're really worried, there are plenty of hypo-allergenic and naturally-sourced sunscreens on the market.
I totally agree. I do not use sunscreen every day. I work in an office. I stay out of the sun, and use an spf 40 that is formulated for baby's skin (Johnson's) when I do go out into the sun. I only use organic, cold-pressed Coconut oil on my face for a moisturiser, day and night (I love it), and my deodorant was bought from a health shop, and uses sodium bicarb and a yummy smelling mixture of herbs and essential oils to stop me getting stinky. It contains no aluminium, like most deodorants do... I don't get how people put that stuff on their skin every single day?? It's so bad for you... aluminium accumulates in your body and causes all kinds of problems. Don't take my word for it, look it up. You get toxin build up. People should really try to cut down on the amount of chemicals they put on their skin. It all gets absorbed. Not cool. My skin has been great since using coconut oil... it used to be combination skin, oily in some places and dry in others, so I would get pimples, as well as having dry skin. Now, it's all sort of evened itself out it seems, it's soft, never gets very oily at all but is never very dry. It gets the occasional pimple but I zap it with tee tree oil. I love what nature has provided for us to use to take care of ourselves. Why would you choose something man has made, when nature is so clearly more powerful and is designed to take care of us?
There's a new product called Zunspot that apparently does a good job of treating sunspots. They were giving away free samples on some of those freebie groups. They sell it directly from their web site for $15.99 (free shipping, too). http://www.zunspot.com
Give it a shot. Hope it works!
Vitamin C scar treatments also work very well to decrease brown spots. I get brown spots on my face all the time, especially on my cheekbone area from acne. The acne spots go away but more often than not leave brown spots like dark freckles. I've also read that kojic acid and hydroquinone are not the safest options around but who really knows these days?

Following up on my earlier post about hydroquinone....
This is where I read about it being unsafe and other things that can give you dermatitis (like vitamin e if you believe it)Scar therapy safety

Dermacure worked wonders for my skin imperfections. i thought your readers would want to know. i believe their website is brandnewskin.org
The best you're gonna get is the best exfloxiation, treat clean skin with a vit E capsule pricked with a pin and rub on enough to moisturize but not be an oil slick, and always, ALWAYS, wear sunscreen! The risk of skin cancer without it is too great. Apply every day!
Dr told me to use BAKING SODA applied to a moist face and rub gently, not too harsh, and it is the best, cheapest exfloxiation you can get!! Use daily if you need too taking care to apply to brown areas......it also works on a soft wash cloth. I was a skeptical until I tried this! My skin is a little oily so the saline in the soda dried up the excess oil to were the vit e gave me a light moisturization................don't BAHAAAAHAAA this actually has worked for me. Sunscreen for life!!! I had basal cell on my lip in which a huge hunk was cut out my lip cut thru
an Ex-sun worshipper who likes my unwrinkled light complection, no crows feet at 52!!!
