Danger: Tanning Industry Media Campaign Could Be Hazardous To Your Health

Which is why a recent pro-tanning campaign financed by tanning bed manufacturers and related industries is of so much concern to me. This group seems to be promoting tanning in general and tanning beds specifically. In a recent full-page New York Times advertisement and other media publicity, the group claims that tanning beds are beneficial, safe and a "natural", more "consistent" alternative to "the sun's erratic light".

 

The group makes selective use of incomplete quotes from authorities whom the public trust to support this claim, in a manner rather reminiscent of movie advertisements that paint a favorable image by selectively excerpting a few words from an unfavorable review, such as "Amazing...." and "A.... remarkable ending"!

 

My amusement at such ridiculous tactics is tempered by my worry that the activities of this special interest group, which represents a rapidly expanding $5 billion dollar industry [1], will undermine the significant strides that dermatologists like myself, in partnership with organizations such as the American Academy of Dermatology and The Skin Cancer Foundation, have made in enhancing public awareness of sun safety measures.
