Colder weather can be very drying even to supple skin, causing dry patches and flakes. If you already suffer from dry skin, winter can make it worse.

What can you do to prevent dry, flaky, itchy winter skin? Simple changes in how you bathe and what products you use during the winter months can help:

1) Apply gentle moisturizers right after you shower, when your skin is still damp.

2) Moisturize daily and use creams that are thicker. Go for "sensitive skin" choices if your skin is really dry and itchy.

3) Try to only shower once daily and keep it to a quick shower. Prolonged showers actually draw moisture from your skin.

4) Don't use water that's too hot and use emollient soaps or "non-soaps" like Cetaphil.

5) Use a humidifier in your bedroom and office.

6) Use petroleum-based moisturizers on your lips when you're out in the cold for long periods.

7) Don't forget to use sunblocks -- even during the winter months. The last thing you want is dry skin getting a sunburn.

8) See a dermatologist if you have scaly skin or develop dry, bleeding areas. You could have eczema. Seek medical attention if you're truly in discomfort.
