    I'm a glaucoma patient who has experienced thicker eyelashes from my eye drops.  Because my eyelashes were skimpy after chemotherapy, I was thrilled to have something good come from taking a daily medicine that was making my eyes red and itchy.  I can see why this medication would be tempting, but I find the idea of using a medication with side effects for a cosmetic purpose rather disturbing.  Your idea of a good quality mascara is a good one not just to save money, but to avoid side effects.
