Occasionally red spots appear on my hands and lower arms. Sometimes the area itches slightly first. At times a spot that looks like a spot my great grandmother would get just appears as if I hit my hand and bruised it, but I know that I haven't hit it on anything What could this be? I am a 51 year old female.

Well you certainly are not old at 51! 
This is one of those things that...could be anything. Do you have any allergies? That would be the first thing I would think about.
I think the only way to know what this is...is to ask your doctor. You could be guessing forever otherwise.
