Q: Dark spots (scars) from mosquito bites and sores.

Is there any way to lighten or make disappear the dark spots that are left on my daughters skin

from insect bites or scraps and such?  She is caucasian with an olive complexion.

People with more melanin in their skin do have to deal with skin discoloration after scarring. You can try a lightening product such as Murad Age Spot & Pigment Lightening Gel. It contains hydroquinone, which has been shown to lighten hyperpigmentation, as well as glycolic acid, which helps exfoliate skin. Using these kinds of lightening products won't cause miraculous fading, but it does seem to help in terms of fading the intensity of dark spots. Keeping her out of the sun will also help prevent the spots from getting darker.

natural skin remedies like Shea butter, lemon juice, lavender oil, or aloe vera gel works wonders without the harsh effects of bleaching agents like hydroquinone, which is a "suspected carcinogen and probable neurotixin and skin sensitizer. Hydroquinone can also cause a skin disease called ochronosis, which leaves irreversible black-blue lesions on the skin. This bleaching agent is found in some skin-lightening products and moisturizers."

vitamin c works well but you have to use something made with stable vitamin c because a lot of these products break down and become useless after you open the tube. If it turns brown it's gone off.

Licorice also lightens dark scar and brown spots.

I just got back from an internship in Mexico where we were out in the jungle hiking almost everyday for a month. I had no bug spray for the entire month!! I got eaten alive!! Or at least the bottom of my LEDs did? And now I have a TON of dark marks on my legs. I have been applying coco butter for a week since I got back.... They still look the same -__- Back when I was in middle school/highschool I used to have a couple of small dark marks on my face and a heavy, slightly larger one smack dab on the center of my nose. I used this product called ambi fade cream and it cleared ALL of my dark marks!! Now this product is not a miracle product...or well it is... But it won't work overnight or even in a week.. It takes months to slowly fade it. In fact I know matter of fact my that I used it off a and on for about a year. But it worked!! Dark marks I had from middle school were now gone. (Though it doesn't work on dark marks :( I know I've tried lol) so I guess it just depends on how dark the mark is. 3-4 years ago when I bought it it was about $8-9. Idk how much it is now but you can find it at a beauty supply store (not Sally's though) the product is advertised as a product for African Americans (though I believe it works on any skintone) so you will most likely need to go to an African American beauty supply store or order it offline. Hop this helps.. I'm going to rebuy some this week. Reply
