Question
Hawaii Dad
07/23/08

Will it be safer for our redheaded children to grow up in Northern California than Hawaii?

We live in Honolulu but are thinking about moving to the Bay Area (1100 miles North) in part because the sun is so bright in Hawaii I get worried about letting them play outside between 8-4 (which is most of daylights hours). We put on sunscreen and wear hats but I can feel how intense the sun is. I did some research and believe that even though Northern California is not the perfect place in terms of sun exposure, its much better than Hawaii. Is this correct? Why or why not? And what types of other micro-regional impacts (location of home or community in a valley or on a hill, for example, or presence of particulate matter in the air from nearby cities or fires) could impact total UV exposure? Thanks!
