Will it be safer for our redheaded children to grow up in Northern California than Hawaii?

We live in Honolulu but are thinking about moving to the Bay Area (1100 miles North) in part because the sun is so bright in Hawaii I get worried about letting them play outside between 8-4 (which is most of daylights hours). We put on sunscreen and wear hats but I can feel how intense the sun is...
