I have similar problem on my right leg, right above the knee. My doctor asked me if I have been putting my keys in the front pocket of my pant and my answer was, yes. Then she said the keys were continuously depressing my upper leg which caused nerve damage and that is why I feel numbness. The sad thing is she said that the nerves are gone for good and never be recovered.
I still doubt if that really is the cause, so let me know if you find out the cause in your situation.
