Q: would the symptoms for sun poisoning start the same day

i was on the river yesterday and today and i thought i used enough sunblock but i suppose not. now i am red as a lobster, swollen in those areas, shaking, have a fever of 100 when i looked a half hour ago, along with nausea. i would like to know if the symptoms of sun poisoning can show up the same day or right after the sunburn occurs.

Hey there

I am so sorry this happened to you.  The thing about sunblock is...it is suggested that you use an SPF of 30 or higher and you have to cover all exposed areas...and reapply every two hours.

It may be that you are feeling this from yesterdays sun damage and then today just added more.

You may want to read my article about sun poisoning and the literature tells us that:  "You may not develop symptoms of sunburn or sun poisoning for 24 hours or longer. The pain of sunburn may be worst between six and 48 hours after sun exposure."

I don't think there is any rule saying sun poisoning can't occur the same day.

With your symptoms it sure sounds like you have this.  I would contact your doctor just to get his or her advice on what to do.

Hope you feel better soon.
