Q: How do I deal with dry skin that gets spotty when i moisturise?

I am a 32 year old woman and until the last year or so I never really suffered from acne. I have always had dry skin on my face and have to use rich moisturisers otherwise it feels tight and uncomfortable. Now I keep getting spots, large painful ones as well as pimples and have tried many different products, both face washes and moisturisers, none of which have worked. The spot control products dry my skin out and make it red and flaky. I tried products for older skin and the spots got better for a week or two then came back with a vegence! I wear as little make-up as possible, just concealer under my eyes and over the worst of the spots with powder over the top and I always remove it when I get home either by washing my face or with cleansing wipes. Is there any middle ground between dry and flaking off or spotty?

Hello Lou

I have experienced this very thing with my skin too.  The painful spots you are describing are called "papules" (large, red, painful blemishes that do not contain pus) and  "pustules" are similar to papules but contain pus...they are what you normally what you think of as a pimple.

I can tell you this...that a dermatologist is going to be so helpful in your case to develop a treatment plan which is good for your unique skin.  Otherwise you are just going to be guessing at what works and what doesn't and also what aggravates your skin.  You will need to think about everything from your cleanser to make up to your moisturizer and...the dermatologist is the best person to help you figure this out.

Let me know if you need any more information or resources...or even how to locate a dermatologist.

Good luck and thank you for your question!
