Dear Margie,
It sounds as if your daughter has hives, an allergic skin reaction which is medically known as urticaria. This could be due to a new medication, or even one that she's been taking for a while, as some allergies can take some time to develop. Other causes of hives include allergy to something that's come into contact with your skin e.g. soap, laundry products which leave residue on clothing, dry cleaning fluids, or to something you've eaten. Hives can also be caused by infections and other internal conditions. About 50% of cases of hives go away as mysteriously as they appeared without a cause ever being identified. I suggest that your daughter returns to see the doctor who prescribed the Tri-Sprintec, for an evaluation of the rash. This doctor can advise you as to whether your daughter should consult a board certified dermatologist for further evaulation and treatment, which could include antihistamines and prescription steroid cream. Hives can occasionally be associated with shortness of breath, wheezing, or swelling of the lips, mouth, tongue or throat. If your daughter experiences any of these symptoms, you should take her immediately to the nearest Emergency Room for urgent treatment, as this could be a life-threatening situation.
Best regards,
Dr. Hema
