Radiation therapy uses x-rays to kill cancer cells or to shrink the size of a tumor in the breast or surrounding tissue. Radiation therapy after mastectomy can reduce local recurrences in many high-risk patients, particularly those with four or more positive lymph nodes or an advanced primary cancer.
