Georgetown University researchers have identified a gene that they say ceases to function in two aggressive forms of cancer. The scientists found that the gene-- known as PTPRD--is inactivated in malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer, and glioblastoma multiforme, a lethal brain tumor. The scientists also say that because PTPRD has been found in other types of cancer, their discovery suggests that this gene may play a role in a wide variety of different cancers.
