The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a new drug called Stelara for adults with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. Stelara works by blocking the action of two proteins that contribute to the overproduction of skin cells in psoriasis patients. FDA officials say that the drug does reduce the immune system's ability to fight infection, which causes some users to develop serious infections that required hospitalization in clinical trials. Stelara also may increase users risk of developing cancer, FDA experts say.
