I can't fall asleep

Hi, my name is Ellen and I'm about 19. Lately I've been having problems falling asleep. When I go to shut my eyes, I feel light headed and my eyes begin to feel heavy. I often times open my eyes right away when I close them because I feel like something bad will happen if I don't. When my eyes are open, I feel just fine. I don't know what to do.
