New Report: Americans Getting More Sleep Than They Think

A new report from the University of Maryland titled Not So Deprived: Sleep in America, 1965-2005 found that, on average, Americans got 59 hours of sleep per week in 2005, the latest year for which precise statistics are available. That is three hours more than in 2000.

How is this possible when it feels like we're getting less sleep than ever?

Do you buy the results of this report? Why or why not? We want to hear from you!

Hi Kate - Thanks for your post.  I'm a moderator for the siter ans though not medically trained, I will try and answer questions as well as try and start a dialogue or lend a hand where I can.

I'm not sure how I feel about this report.  I know with 3 kids, a husband, a dog, a house, a job, and a nasty cold I am not sleeping much!

But it seemed to me that the parameters of each report discussed were a bit different.  This may be why the results showed an increase in sleep.

Tell us more - are you involved in the research?  Your post says, "...we want to know".  Who is "we"?

Thanks so much, hope to hear from you soon.

All the best, sue
