REM while awake

Is it possible to experience REM while awake? Sometimes, when trying to fall asleep, I have the feeling that my eyes are moving about rapidly under closed lids, and the sensation is just sufficiently uncomfortable to prevent me from falling asleep. When this happens, I have to sit up in bed and look around the room to bring myself to full wakefulness, and then start the falling asleep process again from the beginning.
