Sleeping Pills and Bizarre Behavior

By Florence Cardinal, Health Guide Friday, May 30, 2008
I wrote an article a short while ago on the strange behavior that sometimes occurs when a person sleepwalks. Sleepwalking, in fact, has sometimes been used as a murder defense.   Something else that can cause similar behavior is the use of sleeping pills. An article in the Wall Street Journal ...

No question this is a real phenom. I've gained 25 lbs in the past year, while taking Ambien. My wife was telling me I go down to the kitchen every night, while 'seemingly asleep' and eat bowl after bowl of cereal. I didn't believe her, until she finally filmed me with our videocam.

It was quite scary to see. I had absolutely no recollection of the event - it was like watching a stranger in my body.

And I was taking it EXACTLY as prescribed - 10mg per night.

Very scary drug. on 2 occassions I attempted to cook something, and the gas  and burner was found on in the morning, with a scorched pot. Both times the pot was empty, and presumably the water had boiled off in the night and the pot was burned black.

This is my question, is there long term effect on your body...liver or any thing else? I have been on ambien for a couple of years and found that when I had weird side effects I simply need to break the pill into a smaller dose. I think alot of these folks are over medicated. It works get for me since have have a terrible time sleeping but am I causing myself long term effects that will hurt me when I am older?

I've had an episode on Ambien that scared the hell out of me. One morning I awoke, and realized I had given myself an injection (for MS) while asleep. My right leg was swollen, and I found the bent syringe on my night stand. Cotton balls and alcohol pads were found in my bed. Very scary!

I have a friend who has taken ambien and then has called me to talk. The conversation has gotten weird both times, very strange. Inappropriate responses that don't make sense. I've told them to never call me after taking it and to go straight to bed. Scary.

This is more of a question.

I know drinking and taking the med. is not a good thing!!

How ever what damage or behavior is expected when doing this?

because when taking the med. and not being abale to sleep then drinking. it still is hard to go to sleep!!

I'm just trying to understand this to help my spouse.
