Michael Jackson endured many surgeries during which time proponol was used as an anaesthesia. His memory was reinforced many times that this drug created instant sleep. The drug is released into the blood stream and the patient is out instantly.
When he began to have insomnia, it is no doubt that his brain remembered this. It is no surprise that when he was desperate for sleep that he was driven to pursue this drug.
That's what I think happened. Not making excuses for Mr. Jackson, just an explanation for what might have occured.
